We think the food tastes nice. We think that we locked the door on our way out, but we aren\u2019t sure. And on top of that, we think \u2013 we are in fact convinced &#8211; that there is good in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you may have noticed that it is not quite as simple in Danish. Often, you\u2019re going to have to decide whether to use <em>tror<\/em>, <em>synes<\/em>, or <em>mener<\/em> when talking about your thoughts, opinions, and beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This little guide will help you get on the right track when you\u2019re not sure whether to use <em>tror, synes, <\/em>or <em>mener <\/em>\u2013 let\u2019s break it down together!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to use <em>tror<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/swaplanguage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/closeup-shot-person-holding-door-knob-opening-door-min-1-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1572\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s say you believe that the door is locked \u2013 but you don\u2019t know for sure, it might also be unlocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jeg tror, at d\u00f8ren er l\u00e5st. <\/em><em>(I think that the door is locked.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This example shows that you have a guess about the situation, but it could also be false. You would need knowledge that you do not have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jeg tror, at pizzaen er god. <\/em><em>(I think that the pizza is good).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now careful \u2013 in English, this sounds suspiciously like an opinion. It sounds like you\u2019ve tried the pizza and you like it. But the word <em>tror<\/em> in the Danish version tells us that you actually haven\u2019t tried the pizza just yet. You just believe that it is good \u2013 maybe because it looks nice, or maybe because the chef who made it has a good reputation. But since you haven\u2019t tasted it, all you can do is guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to use <em>synes<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/swaplanguage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/three-girl-friends-having-pizza-bar1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1568\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, what if you have indeed tried the pizza, and it tastes delicious to you? This is the time where you can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jeg synes, at pizzaen er god. <\/em><em>(I think that the pizza is good).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, to express your opinions, <em>synes<\/em> is the verb of choice! It tells people that what follows is your subjective opinion, how you feel about something. They might agree, or they might disagree \u2013 this is just your take on it. According to your taste, this is a good pizza \u2013 even though the Italian guy next to you is shaking his head because you chose to have kebab on top of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to use <em>mener<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/swaplanguage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/stefan-barkman-ysambitxV8M-unsplash1-1024x656.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1554\" width=\"768\" height=\"492\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Mener <\/em>is a way to express that you are convinced or strongly believe that something is the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Anna mener, at kebabpizza blev opfundet i Skandinavien. (I think that kebab pizza was invented in Scandinavia.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe Anna has good reason to believe that kebab pizza was invented in Scandinavia, as she read it in a guide or she is knowledgeable on the matter. Either way, you are pretty sure that this is the case.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jeg mener, at vi burde passe bedre p\u00e5 milj\u00f8et.<\/em> <em>(I think that we should take better care of the environment.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technically, you could also use <em>synes<\/em> here, because it is an opinion. But by using <em>mener<\/em>, we are making the statement stronger. We indicate that we are convinced about this and that what we are saying is based on facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about <em>t\u00e6nker<\/em>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/swaplanguage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/magnet-me-LDcC7aCWVlo-unsplash1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Woman at a desk, thinking about whether she should use tror synes or mener in Danish.\" class=\"wp-image-1555\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re savvy at Danish, you might be wondering why <em>at t\u00e6nke <\/em>hasn\u2019t been mentioned in this post once \u2013 even though it\u2019s one of the most literal translations of <em>to think<\/em>. In modern Danish, people sometimes actually say <em>jeg t\u00e6nker, at &#8230; <\/em>in place of <em>jeg tror\/synes\/mener\/ved, at..<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But technically, this is not correct. <em>At t\u00e6nke<\/em> is more about the act of thinking itself, instead of introducing the content of a thought or an opinion. Some examples using <em>t\u00e6nker <\/em>are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jeg t\u00e6nker p\u00e5 den gode pizza, jeg spiste i g\u00e5r. (I&#8217;m thinking about the good pizza I ate yesterday.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jeg t\u00e6nker over, om d\u00f8ren er l\u00e5st. (I&#8217;m thinking about whether the door is locked).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jeg kan ikke sove om natten, fordi jeg t\u00e6nker for meget. (I can&#8217;t sleep at night because I think too much.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What exactly you are thinking when you&#8217;re thinking about the tasty pizza or when you&#8217;re trying to sleep is not as important as the fact that you <em>are<\/em> spending your time thinking. And when you&#8217;re thinking about whether the door is locked, you don&#8217;t really have a guess or at least, you aren&#8217;t sharing it &#8211; you&#8217;re just using your brain trying to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tror, synes, or mener &#8211; now you know 3 ways of thinking!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And now you&#8217;re an expert on a whole bunch of different ways to voice your thoughts, beliefs, and opinions in Danish using <em>tror, synes,<\/em> or<em> mener<\/em>!
